Kielder Forest (June 7th 2008)

Today’s ride out was to re-visit another favorite route of mine through the Scottish Borders to the Kielder Forest area.

http://www.dutchman.org.uk/media/IMG_2713.jpgLeaving Edinburgh behind me before 7am, I headed down a deserted A7 through Hawick towards Langholm.

Just before the 30mph restriction entering Langholm there is a minor left turn onto a single track unclassified road towards Newcastleton & beyond.

At the top of the first ascent there is a modern sculpture & memorial to local poet, Hugh MacDiarmid.

It’s worth pausing here for a few moments as the views, especially back towards the west, are simply stunning.

I carried on heading east through Kielder & Bellingham, following minor roads all the way to Rothbury near Alnwick before taking the A697 & more minor roads back to Edinburgh.

A really great day’s biking, covering 233 miles on very quiet roads and taking enough time to take a few photographs.
